About Our Work

Children’s Center | University | Medical Clinic | Community Center | Garden | & More

Our current endeavors are centered in Gemena, a prominent urban center in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like the nation, Gemena has grappled with persistent conflict and instability, culminating in extreme poverty. Our partnership with change-makers in Congo, such as The Sanguma Foundation, has enabled us to collaborate on various projects. Since 2020, we have reached and positively impacted the lives of more than 15,000 families and individuals in Gemena.

We’ve pinpointed individuals driving positive change and advocating for enhanced well-being and socio-economic progress in Gemena. Our active commitment involves providing them with the essential resources to turn their vision of an improved quality of life and a prospering community into reality.

The Children’s Center

Serve the Vulnerable: Too many children are orphaned in a vicious cycle of poverty due to a history of imperialism, violence, and oppression; extremely low access to medical care; and limited economic mobility. The Sabuli’s Children Center exists to serve children most vulnerable to this reality.

Promote Dignity and Hope: Our commitment to each child of the children' center: shelter with a safe home; provide loving care; nourish with good food; equip with education; and provide development experiences that prepare for future life opportunities.

Raise Up a New Generation: Through the children's center, the lives of over 100 children have been filled with hope and love. They have the opportunity to rewrite their story and live a transformed life more equipped to reach their full potential. We are raising a generation of transformational leaders.

Equipping our Most Valuable Resource - People: A nationally accredited university located in Gemena, the capital city of the Sud-Ubangi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ubangi Protestant University (UPU) exists to prepare students to be effective leaders of the region. UPU is the first university in the region and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals in an ever-changing world.

A Global Perspective: UPU provides access to quality higher education to the surrounding community where students engage the local context with a global perspective. Current areas of study include agriculture, economics, medical biology, and theology. UPU has visiting national and international professors who offer various perspectives for the students. Students of UPU have opportunities to attend classes at other universities worldwide.

A Local Transformation: UPU is committed to specifically improving the local leadership skills in Ubangi. Because of UPU, many members of the region now have access to higher education. UPU is an accredited university through the Congolese government and has gained much respect throughout the nation.

Access to Quality Medical Care: The Judy Medical Clinic (JMC) exists to provide quality medical services to the kids at the children’s center as well as to provide access to much needed medical services for members of the region.

Keeping Families Together: Congo has one of the highest maternal death rates in the world — maternity too often means mortality. A stark reality that contributes to the extremely high rate of maternal deaths is a lack of adequate medical care. The medical clinic will serve to address the ongoing orphan cycle by better-supporting mothers who give birth, with high-quality care.

Affordable and Comprehensive Care: Quality medical service is hard to find in the region and travel to Kinshasa (Capitol) is not affordable or accessible by the majority of the community. The medical clinic serves as a highly subsidized quality medical service to ensure greater access to medical care.

The Community Center

Economic Development: The Gemena Community Center is the first of its kind in the Ubangi region. The center exists to provide economic development for the community. Located in the heart of the city, the center houses numerous multipurpose rooms for community events, education programs, and vocational training.

Vocational Training: Vocational training will be provided in areas including accounting, agriculture, carpentry, construction, driving, English, entrepreneurship, information technology (IT), mechanics, and sewing. Other educational opportunities including courses on first aid, hygiene, and nutrition will be provided to the greater community.

Healthy Nourishment: Sabuli's Growing Garden is over 120 acres of land that has been cleared, planted, and harvested. The garden is about six miles away from the children’s center and exists to provide a sustainable source of nourishing food for the children.

A Place of Employment: The garden offers employment opportunities for many community members. With extremely high unemployment and a lack of stable jobs in the region, the garden is a place of meaningful employment allowing many to better provide for themselves and their families.
